In the book of Jude in the bible, it talks about the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah siffering the punishment of eternal fire. Before i really studied the subject i thought that the fire of hell was eternal. In this text it tells us that Sodom and Gomorrah suffering eternal fire from God's judgment. Are the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah burning today? No. How come the bible says that the fire is eternal? When we look in the Greek original, we find that the word eternal means that not the punishing is eternal but the outcome of the burning is eternal! In other words Sodom and Gomorrah are not burning today, but the outcome of the burning of Sodom and Gomorrah remains today and will last forever! So the outcome of the burning will be forever, not the burning itself. It is the same thing with hell. Hell will not be forever, hell will burn up the wicked MA 4: '1For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.' The wirked at the end of the millenium will receive fire from God and will be devoured, not burning ever and ever, the outcome of the burning will be for ever and ever not the burning itself!
RE 20:9 'And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.' At that time all the wicked who ever lived will be concumed by God to be no more forever! MT 10:28 'And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.'
